Armand Marchand
George Charbonneau
New Bedford Festival Theater
Armand and George met as students at Bridgewater State College where they were fraternity brothers in Alpha Upsilon fraternity and were also officers of the Drama Company.
They both were hired by the New Bedford Public Schools as teachers in the English Department at New Bedford High where they soon became advisors of the NBHS Drama Club directing over 60 productions in their 35 years of service, including My Fair Lady, which was the recipient of the Moss Hart Grand Trophy, awarded by the New England Theatre Conference as best production in the 6 state region. In 1983 they were hired by the Zeiterion Theatre,where they co-direct 15 musicals including the acclaimed A Chorus Line. In 1990 Marchand founded their production company, the New Bedford Festival Theatre and functioned as its Executive Producer through 2019, producing 41 musicals including Les Misérables (2008), and Mary Poppins (2015) both recipients of the Moss Hart Award, and Hairspray (2012) winning the coveted Moss Hart Trophy. Charbonneau has been the Artistic Director of NBFT for the past 30 years and has directed 17 of the group’s productions.
Marchand and Charbonneau were named Teachers of the Year by the B’nai Brith (1975) recognized for their contributions to the performing arts by Bridgewater State University (2004) and were honored with the Chancellor’s Medals awarded by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth by Dr. Divina Grossman, Chancellor “for their particular expertise in production and artistic direction, providing audiences with superlative theatre experiences through an outstanding variety of summer production.”
