Small but mighty, young but wise. New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center opened in 2016 in a 3,000 sq. foot space and quickly became a place of pride and “must-see” attraction in New Bedford’s historic district. This is a museum done right, with only 2 ½ paid staff and dedicated volunteers.
“We have a shared history as Americans in a democratic society,” says Lee Blake. “Our focus is on the history of New Bedford’s people of color: African American, West Indian, Cape Verdean, Native American. Their stories need to be told; their stories are important.”
Most museums are filled with objects. Here, the building and the garden are the objects, and they tell us personal stories about these New Bedford residents that add another dimension to the local picture.
