Founded in 1962, the mission of WHALE is to foster historic preservation and continued use of the city’s architectural heritage to enhance community and economic vitality in New Bedford. WHALE accomplishes its mission through the restoration and reuse of historic structures for the economic and community development of New Bedford, which provides commercial development and affordable housing opportunities to low-and moderate-income individuals and families, promotes arts and culture, and educates residents on the importance of the historic and architectural culture of New Bedford’s diverse people.
Over the course of 62 years, WHALE has saved over 70 historically significant buildings, from the Rotch-Jones-Duff House to the iconic First Baptist Church/Steeple Playhouse. With each restoration, WHALE is contributing to a new history for New Bedford and a new narrative for the city. Restoring historic buildings and landmarks is an investment in a stronger, more prosperous community that can pride in its heritage and have hope for its future.
